Description:

The communications technologies in use today, such as PSTN analog, GSM, GPRS or TCP/IP, will be expandable in the near future through UMTS or other technologies. This means that it is not always necessary to update immediately to the latest technology: in fact, attractive cost benefits can be realised from time to time through falling prices for proven transfer methods.

Communication according to volume
The selection of the appropriate technology is dependent on the network architecture, network size and the existing communications infrastructure. Most modules support not only a connection to a fixed installation near the measuring point (CS, RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet), they also support remote transfer via telephone modem, GSM or GPRS. As protocols, the IEC-62056-21 and the manufacturers’ DLMS standard are available for use.

Simple installation…
The interchangeability of the modules through Plug+Play installation keeps installation costs down. Already installed meters (including external products) can be retro-fitted by using an external adapter, as long as they can operate with a CS-, RS-232- or RS-485 interface.

…and new possibilities
Retro-fitting new transfer standards opens new possibilities to energy providers. Multiple connections and multi-master operations increase economic viability and availability. Most important though, true bi-directionality allows the development of new offers to meet the demands of a liberalised energy market – and the step into the Advanced Metering Age.
